Renovating your private club? 3 things to consider

Are you on the board or staff of a private club that’s contemplating a renovation or expansion? Then this blog post is for you!

We’ve designed a number of country club renovations and additions over the years, and they come with a special set of considerations.

Here are three things to think about as you begin the process.

  1. Communications and consensus—First and foremost, what is the vision and desired outcome for this project? Members may have different priorities when it comes to club improvements. Does the membership want an investment in the golf course? Or would people prefer to see improvements to dining and common areas frequented by families? It’s always a good idea to begin capital improvements with a member survey. This helps sort out competing priorities and gives members a voice in the process.

  2. Timelines—Given the nature of clubs, your project will probably take longer than you anticipate. With so many stakeholders involved, there are multiple layers of socialization and approval—important steps that take time. In addition, members expect to access club amenities during construction. As a result, building usually happens in phases, extending the project timeline.

  3. Budgets—A designer with experience in private clubs can craft creative solutions that make a big impact while minimizing inconvenience and costs. On a recent club renovation in Charlotte, we decided to keep the bar in its original location but reorient the space 90 degrees, keeping existing utilities in place. This completely changed the space aesthetically while reducing construction time and costs. On another club project, we repurposed an underutilized storage space into a private room, giving club members a new space for small parties and meetings. As you interview potential design partners, ask about their specific experience with private clubs. A great designer will bring creative, budget-conscious ideas and focus on the key design elements for clubs, including maximizing flow, creating easy access to spaces for members and magnifying your club’s beautiful outdoor views. As you’re thinking about your project budget, be sure to consider any technology upgrades you may want to make to club spaces, as well as new mobile capabilities such as apps that would let members book dining or tee times. They may not have a direct impact on the design of your physical spaces, but they could be a significant element in upgrading your club experience.

We’ve painted the picture of an involved and complex process. Daunting, right? So what are the upsides to renovating your club or adding amenities? Top of the list, you’ll be adding value for your members. Moreover, great renovations and updates attract new members that help fund future value-add projects, creating a virtuous cycle of improvements that will keep your club relevant and vital for years to come.
